How Often Should You Get a Massage?

There is no universal answer.

The “right” frequency depends on why you are receiving massage, what you are experiencing, your budget, your schedule, and how your body responds.

A person receiving massage for a specific short-term issue may have a different schedule from someone who uses massage as periodic supportive care.

Start with your goal

Ask yourself:

What am I hoping to get from massage?

If the goal is general relaxation, occasional appointments may be enough.

If you are addressing persistent muscular tension, a short series of appointments may make more sense.

If you are recovering from surgery, frequency should be coordinated with your healthcare team's recommendations and your stage of recovery.

If you are managing a chronic condition, massage may be one part of a broader care plan.

More is not always better

Massage is still a physical intervention.

Your tissues need time to respond.

Repeated aggressive work simply because you believe deeper or more frequent is better is not necessarily a sound strategy.

The appropriate amount of treatment depends on the individual.

What does research say about frequency?

One of the challenges in massage research is that there is no single standardized treatment schedule.

Studies vary considerably in:

  • Session length

  • Number of sessions

  • Frequency

  • Technique

  • Population

  • Outcome measured

That makes it difficult to prescribe one evidence-based schedule for everyone.

A practical way to think about it

Instead of asking, “How often should everyone get a massage?” ask:

How often is useful for me?

That answer can change.

You may have a period when monthly massage is enough.

You may have a period when you need more frequent care.

You may eventually space appointments farther apart.

The goal should be appropriate care—not creating dependence on a calendar.

At The Clementine, I would rather understand what you are trying to accomplish and build a reasonable plan around that than automatically tell every client they need weekly massage forever.
